Visiting Timișoara
Timişoara is a vibrant cosmopolitan city with rich and amazing history, located in the western part of Romania. First mentioned in 1212, it served between 1316-1323 as royal seat for King Charles Robert of Hungary, also being an important fortress in the battle against the Ottomans. Conquered by Kara Ahmet Pasa, remained under Ottoman rule between 1552-1716, controlled directly by the Sultan and enjoying a special status which came to end in 1716 when Prince Eugene of Savoy liberated the city. In 1781 Emperor Joseph II raised Timişoara to the rank of “free royal city” as part of the Austrian Empire, and from 1867 of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Since 1918, following the World War I, Timişoara belongs to Romania, being considered the capital city of the historical Banat region.
Beyond his fascinating history, Timişoara represents a must-to-visit city due to its multicultural/multiethnic characteristics (three theatres, the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre, the German State Theatre, the Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre, 80 churches) and stunning architecture. It was called 'The Little Vienna” of Eastern Europe due to its abundance in Baroque and Secessionist architecture. The most important Baroque monuments are the Catholic Dome (built between 1736–1774) and the Baroque Palace (hosting the Art Museum), while many beautiful Secessionist palaces are scattered all around the city center. The city’s amazing religious architecture is also emphasized by the orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral (Neo-Byzantine style), the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral (Baroque style), and the Cetate Synagogue (eclectic style).
Timișoara was in 2023 one of the three Cultural Capitals of Europe, becoming an even more important tourist destination. Useful information about Timisoara and its highlights can be found here: Visit Timișoara. The Tripadvisor site also recommends several tourist attractions and things-to-do in Timişoara.
During the second day of the conference (Monday, September 22) a guided city walking tour will be organized for the ProtStab 2025 participants (included in the conference fee, previous registration needed).
